What kind of box should I use to ship? What am I allowed to mail or send UPS? What are the best shipping supplies? How do I pack a box for shipping? How do I label the box? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this informative article.
Be Careful What You Ship
Check with your carrier before sending anything fragile, liquid, perishable or hazardous. Do not ship highly flammable items, such as gasoline, oil, or aerosol cans. Unless you are an approved distributor, you will not be able to ship alcoholic beverages. Many personal care items, such as astringent or perfume, also contain alcohol and may be regulated. If you are sending items overseas, check with customs for that country to make sure you aren’t sending any prohibited items. If possible, remove batteries from electronic items before shipping.
Choose the Right Shipping Supplies
Start with a new or gently used corrugated cardboard box. Keep in mind that every time a box is shipped, it loses about 50 percent of its strength. Do not use a box that has rips, holes or damaged flaps. Single-walled cardboard boxes are generally good for up to 28 pounds. Double walled boxes are generally good for up to 95 pounds, but keep in mind that any boxes over 70 pounds may be subject to an additional handling fee. Do not use flimsy cardboard such as a shoebox or gift box. Do not use liquor boxes. They may be easy to obtain, but they are not allowed for shipping.
